Foundations Guide

Observing the Night Sky

Successful observing is mostly planning: matching targets to your sky conditions, timing your session, and using a repeatable setup routine that preserves dark adaptation.

Session planning checklist

  • Check cloud cover, transparency, seeing, and wind together.
  • Schedule around Moon phase and Moonrise/Moonset.
  • Choose 3–5 priority targets by altitude and time window.
  • Prepare star charts for your exact location and date.
  • Pack red light, dew control, warm layers, and backup power.

Working with light pollution

Bortle class helps, but local glare matters just as much. Shield direct lights, observe from shadowed positions, and prioritize high-surface-brightness targets when skies are bright.

Beginner target progression

Start with the Moon and bright planets, then open clusters, globular clusters, emission nebulae with filters, and finally galaxies under darker skies.
