Telescope Buying Guide
The best telescope is one you can carry, align, and use often. Balance aperture, mount quality, portability, and your observing goals.
Optical designs
- Refractor: low maintenance, high contrast, often pricier per inch.
- Newtonian reflector: most aperture per cost, needs collimation.
- Schmidt-Cassegrain: compact and versatile, longer cooldown.
Mounts matter most
A stable mount beats larger aperture on a shaky tripod. For visual use, Dobsonian mounts are cost-effective. For imaging, prioritize an equatorial mount with payload headroom.
Budget tiers
Entry: binoculars or 130mm tabletop reflector. Mid-range: 6–8" Dobsonian or 80mm ED refractor. Advanced: quality EQ mount plus dedicated imaging optics.
